This is a special edition of Four Downs in which I will go over all the teams that have either made the playoffs or can make the playoffs based on scenarios heading into the final week. The things we know so far:
1) The Atlanta Falcons have clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
2) All 6 teams and 4 Divisions have been accounted for in the AFC with the order just up for grabs.
3) The Indianapolis Colts are the 5th seed and the Cincannati Bengals are the 6th seed.
4) The Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins battle for the division on Sunday Night.
5) If the Minnesota Vikings beat the Green Bay Packers at home they are in.
Last week we saw the formidable Pittsburgh Steelers get knocked out of the playoffs in front of a home crowd. The Cincinnati Benglas or (Bane as they should be known) destroyed Heinz Field and terrorized the Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger threw another costly interception with 30 ticks left remaining in the game and the score tied at 10. In fact the only scoring touchdown the Bengals scored was a pick-six by Leon Hall while A.J. Green caught 10 passes for 116 yards. No question the Bengals are a better team then last year and two consecutive playoff appearances is huge from an organization that has struggled to make the playoffs. The team however, will go only as far as Andy Dalton and their stingy defense go. They have had a rollercoaster of a year with win streaks and losing streaks and week 17 against the Ravens, is the perfect opportunity for the Bengals to show they are for real.
While that was going on the Indianapolis Colts not only clinched a playoff spot but a year after winning just two games, there is some real consideration for Bruce Arians and Andrew Luck as Coach and Rookie of the Year respectively. What Arians has done coming out of retirement from Pittsburgh and stepping in for an ill Chuck Pagano has truly been one of the best stories from the NFL this year. Andrew Luck came in with high expectations but no one could have imagined a 10 or even an 11 win season. As great as the Colts have been, most of their wins have been at home with there only road wins against Tennessee, Detroit, KC and Jax all teams with 5 wins or less. They will have to find some more magic and go on the road in a tough game against either New England or Baltimore.
In the NFC despite a Dallas Cowboys loss to the New Orleans Saints in overtime Tony Romo and Dez Bryant will play for the NFC East Division this week against the Washington Redskins. The reason being is that the NY Giants got hammered by the Baltimore Ravens and can only make the playoffs if Dallas, Chicago and Minnesota all lose. The Cowboys would win the tiebreaker over the Redskins based on common games record which is the 3rd thing taken in account behind 1. Head-To-Head and 2. Best W/L record within division. They would be tied in the first two and based on the common games against the AFC (4) and NFC South (4) Dallas has the edge 5-4.
The Minnesota Vikings not only kept their playoff hopes alive but put themselves in the driving seat after beating the Houston Texans on the road. I had the Texans dusting up the Vikings and in fact it was the other way around and Adrian Peterson didn’t even have over 100yds rushing. Jared Allen wasn't 100 percent but the rest of the defense including underrated safety and possibly Defensive ROY Harrison Smith stepped up. If the Vikings beat the Packers this week, not only would the clinch a wild-card berth but they would most likely be facing Green Bay at Lambeau the following week. While the Chicago Bears easily took care of the Arizona Cardinals and with a win against Detroit and a Vikings loss the Bears would be the 6th seed, but this is after a 7-1 start
This is what makes football exciting people, there are multiple scenarios for teams vying for a playoff, a home berth, seeding it all matters. Everything will be clear after the final game of the season is played around 11:45 and we can start gearing up for the playoffs. I just can't believe that it's already week 17.
Bold Prediction: Christian Ponder plays a good game. He's done it before against the Packers.

Four Downs: A look back at week 15
It was “Statement Sunday” in the NFL last weekend and the biggest wiiner was the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers and Colin Kapernick shocked the NFL world by scoring 41 points against New England, in Foxbourough and winning. Also, in the NFC East there is a 3-way tie at the top with Washington, Dallas and New York all (8-6).
First Down: “Colin Kaepernick” Since his debut on Monday Night against the Chicago Bears on November 19th, Colin Kaepernick has been a stud for the San Francisco 49ers. He has won 4 of his 5 starts with the lone loss coming in overtime against the St.Louis Rams. This past weekend in the game of the week the 49ers flew to Foxborough to face Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Brady had been perfect in December at home until the 49ers and Jim Harbaugh rolled in. The 49ers controlled most of the game on both sides of the ball jumping out to an early 31-3 lead. That was until the 4th, when the Patriots scored 28 unanswered points to tie the game. On the ensuing kick after New England had tied it, LaMichael James returned the ball past mid-field and on the very next play Kaepernick found Michael Crabtree for a 38-yard touchdown, which ultimately made the difference in a 41-34 win. Kapernick finished with 4 touchdown passes and one pick. While New England basically threw away a shot at home-field advantage. This week also on Sunday night the 49ers face a difficult road game against Pete Carroll Seattle Seahawks in what would see the winner take the division.
Second Down: “Massacre in Atlanta” Statement Sunday saw the NY Giants and Atlanta Falcons battle it out, in a rematch of last year’s NFC Wildcard game. Just like last year’s game it was a dud with one team way outperforming the other. However, this time around it was the Falcons who were at home, laying down the beatdown. The Falcons defense picked off Eli Manning twice, including the first play of the game in a 34-0 blowout, putting the Giants in a tough situation. The Falcons solidified themselves home-field advantage but nothing ever goes right for Atlanta in the playoffs so we shall see going forward what will happen. If there is one thing that Sunday showed us it is that these Falcons are not like the past. Their defense hits hard, their secondary plays good coverage, Jacquizz Rodgers is a nice “change of pace” back and Julio Jones, Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez are a tough trio to contain. It’s going to come down to execution and Matt Ryan.
Third Down: “Pack it Up” After eight games the Green Bay Packers had already lost two more games then they had all last season. What was even more of a concern was that the Chicago Bears were flying to a 7-1 start and their defense was playing out of their minds. Since then the Packers have won 5 of 6 and the Bears have lost 5 of 6. Last Sunday, at Soldier Field the Bears needed to stop the freefall and try to hold on to the division with a win over the Packers. Unfortunatley, Aaron Rodgers, James Jones and Clay Matthews had something to say about that and single-handedly beat the Bears 21-13. Jay Culter was constantly bombarded with pressure and no one besides Brandon Marshall (who set a Bears franchise record for receptions) could catch a ball. The Bears still control their destiny and with winnable games against Arizona and Detroit the Bears should be in it until the end. However, overlooking opponents have been costly to teams this year and even a Ryan Lindley led Cardinals team can surprise you on an off day, and the Bears have had too many off-days. If the Bears fail to make the playoffs again, especially after their hot start expect many changes coming including coach and QB and oh yeah, Brian Urlacher is out again.
Fourth Down: “The Embarrassing NY Jets and Mark Sanchez” I really am at a loss for words when it comes to the NY Jets and their franchise. They bring in Tim “the terrific” Tebow only to have him sell jerseys and sit on the bench. On Monday Night, against a weak Tennessee Titans squad the Jets defense played strong but their offense was beyond atrocious. The Jets had chances and Mark Sanchez just dropped the ball (literally!) So with the Jets season over, people were expecting Tim Tebow to step in but it appears that all along Greg McElroy (the supposed 3rd stringer) was the real back up and will get the start this week against the Chargers. That in itself depicts how bad the season has gotten for the Jets squad.
BOLD PREDICTION: My CJ Spiller prediction last week was a little too much, but I believe this week that Jay Cutler will get sacked more times then completions to Brandon Marshall.

Four Downs: A look back at week 14
In what should have been, the game of the week the New England Patriots solidified themselves as the top team in the AFC after dismantling the Houston Texans. While the Chicago Bears have major issues they need to sort out if they want to make the playoffs.
First Down: “An Emotional Win” Everyone around Valley Ranch, TX would tell you that this was a must win game for the Dallas Cowboys and their opponent was no slouch. The Cincinnati Bengals had been having an up-and-down season but were riding a 4-game winning streak; but no one could have forseen what would transpired before that. Nose Tackle Josh Brent got into a car accident and killed practice squad member and very close friend Jerry Brown Jr. 48 hours later and the Cowboys had to play a tough road game with emotions riding high. The Bengals controlled for the most part of the game, and were up 9 points in the final quarter. However, Tony Romo led an emotional charged team to ten 4th quarter points including a GW Dan Bailey FG to beat the Bengals 20-19. The win was big it masked the real problem between Brent and Brown Jr. The Cowboys have two tough but winnable home games against Pittsburgh (this week) and New Orleans and wrap the season up on the road against RGIII.
Second Down: “I am Still the Master” Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are the only two people remaining from their dynasty run at the beginning of the millennium. Since then, their has been a lot of moving pieces that have been added to a team that has reached the Super Bowl twice out of the last four years, (and lost both). This year “The Brady Bunch” are at it again with tight end Rob Gronkowski leading the charge for most of the season before a serious injury. Since then guys like Julian Edelman, Donte Stallworth had stepped up, but both are now on Injured Reserve. Brandon Lloyd and tight end Aaron Hernandez are solid with ol’ reliable Wes Welker in the slot. On Monday Night in a battle of the top teams in the AFC the Patriots showed once again why there are not just the best home team in the AFC but the best team in general. Brady threw 4 touchdown passes and was nearly flawless against the Texans stingy defense. The Patriots defense stepped up and was the better of the two; neutralizing Arian Foster, Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson. The Patriots have already clinched their division and have a 1st round bye in the sights.
Third Down: “Oh My, Lions, Dolphins and Bears” Unfortunately there are no Tigers in football but on Sunday the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins and probably the most shocking of all the Chicago Bears all lost. Detroit fought hard but the conditions at Lambeau Field were just too much in a 27-20 losing effort. The Dolphins and Ryan Tannehill stayed in it for most of the game against the SF 49ers until Colin Kapernick ran 50 yards in to the endzone with under 3 to play. Dolphins lose 27-13 and then there are the Chicago Bears. A few weeks ago, they were looking dangerous, unstoppable and in control of their own destiny. Since then the Bears have lost 4 of 5 and face Green Bay this week. It was last week however with a depleted defense that could not stop "All Day" Peterson and the Vikings Minnesota Vikings. Peterson ran for 154 yards and 2 scores as the Vikings won 21-14. That is with Christian Ponder throwing for 91 yards and Jay Cutler getting constant pressure. The Bears are now in 6th in the AFC as the Seattle Seahawks also at (8-5) have the tie-breaker. The Bears do have the Cardinals and Lions to finish the season off but it will be all playoff mode from hear on if the Bears want to make it.
Fourth Down: “Kirk Cousins?” If a tie in football is considered kissing your sister, what does losing to a Cousin mean? In all seriousness the game of the week saw RGIII play a motivational game and put his team in the best position to win against a tough Baltimore Ravens squad. Unfotunately, Griffin was not on the field when the Redskins tied it, that was Kirk Cousins a 4rd pick from this years past draft. Cousins only threw the ball twice and completed both passes, one of which was a TD pass to Pierre Garcon from 11 yards to cut it to 28-26. On the 2-PT Convert Cousins ran it in untouched. In OT the Ravens punted the ball and it was returned inside Ravens territory. Cousins handed the ball off a few more tims and Kai Forbath hit a GW 34 yard FG for the 31-28 win. The Redskins faced a Ravens defense without Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs, but it was still a huge win and kept them in the playoff race.
Bold predicition: C.J. Spiller will have more combined yards then the Seattle Seahawks offense will have in total.

Four Downs: A look back at week 13
Each week we get closer to see who will be the twelve particpants in this year’s dance. So far we know that the Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots and Denver Broncos have all clinched their divisions while the Houston Texans just need one more win to seal their division and possibly home-field advantage as well.
First Down: “The BATCH man” 38-year old Charlie Batch did what most 38 year old men DON’T do and that is win a football game. After losses to Baltimore and Cleveland, Batch had one more outing to prove that he can still play football. If you were to tell me that Charlie Batch would throw for 100 more passing yards then his counterpart Joe Flacco and beat the Baltimore Ravens, I’d say you were nuts, but that is exactly what happened. Batch outplayed Flacco and the Steelers defense with the return of Troy Polamalu was better then ever in a 23-20 stunning road win. Batch led his team to 10 points in the fourth quarter including a drive that ended with a Shaun Suisham game winning field goal as time expired and oh yeah Ray Rice got no touches in the fourth quarter. The Steelers should look at it as a blessing to have won 1 of 3 without Big Ben and with his return the Pittsburgh Steelers could be gearing up for a playoff run.
Second Down: “Those Darn Detroit Lions” Some in the media said that the Detroit Lions would be better then last year as they take the next step forward. I did say the Lions would make the playoffs at the beginning of last year and they did, but this year teams were prepared for the Lions and took more notice and I didn't feel that they had the personnel to respond. The Lions have not shown any resistance and my premontion of them not making them the playoffs has become true. The Lions besides Calvin Johnson are not what they once were. The defense is atrocious, Ndamukong Suh has been in the headlines for all the wrong reason, Jim Schwartz literally costed his team a win on thanksgiving and then what happened last Sunday may have been the straw that broke the camels back. Many teams in the AFC wild card race were hoping for the Lions to beat an Indianapolis Colts that have been brutal on the road. While the Buffalo Bills were finishing up the Jaguars and the Jets and Bengals were winning; a 33-20 Lions lead with under 5 looked good and would ensure that those teams would move up a game. Until Andrew Luck connected with LaVon Brazil with just under 3 to play and then led the drive of the week and on fourth down and ten after the Lions went 3-and-out. Luck hit Donnie Avery who ran untouched into the end zone for the win as time expired in one of the most thrilling games of the year. Colts win 35-33, Luck plays amazing, they inch closer to the playoffs, Chuck Pagano is on his way back all signs are looking good to a team that won just 2 games all of last year. For the Lions they showed that they can't come up big when it matters most. It would be nice to see Megatron beat Jerry Rice's record for receiving yards.
Third Down: “You got to be kidding me” Just when you thought that the Seattle Seahawks had no chance on the road against the tough Chicago Bears they find a way to pull one out. Russell Wilson continues to have a great year at quarterback for the Seahawks who initially brought in Matt Flynn for a whole boatload of money to be their guy. Wilson coupled with one of the best defenses playing well resulted in 23-17 thrilling overtime win. He led the what should have been game winning drive when he hit Golden Tate for a touchdown with just 23 clicks left in the game. However, Jay Cutler somehow found Brandon Marshall deep to set up a Robbie Gould field goal. In overtime the Seahawks won the toss and drove 8 minutes and won the game on a Sidney Rice 13-yard reception. The Seahawks have been strong at home and have 3 of their last 4 at home. They also have tiebreakers on Green Bay *, Chicago, Dallas, Minnesota and Tampa Bay.
Fourth Down: “Just pure emotion” Although the playoffs are way out of reach, after what happened at Aarowhead Stadium with Linebacker Jovan Belcher taking his girlfriends life and then his, it was tough to play a football game. They took a poll and the passionate Chiefs fans wanted/needed football to help get them through this. If the Kansas City Chiefs showed any of that emotion they had on that field last Sunday earlier in the season, they would have a better record. Brady Quinn won his first game in the NFL in over three years and did not turn the ball over once. Quinn was solid throwing for 203 and 2 touchdowns and got help from Jamaal Charles who ran for 127-yards. Cam Newton was good too, but the Chiefs defense buckled down when it had too and came out on top 27-21 over the Carolina Panthers in their only home win of the season. This game will be a lone bright spot for the Cheifs, not because of the death of course but because of they way they overcame it, became a team and won a hard fought game.
Bold Prediction: Phillip Rivers will have more interceptions thrown then touchdowns.
First Down: “The BATCH man” 38-year old Charlie Batch did what most 38 year old men DON’T do and that is win a football game. After losses to Baltimore and Cleveland, Batch had one more outing to prove that he can still play football. Four Downs: A look back at week 12
This much is certain. The NFL playoffs are wide open. Just when you thought that teams were down and out like the Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins, they find themselves back in the hunt after a big win in week 12.
First Down: “Ryan Tannehill” Even though the Seattle Seahawks abysmal (1-4) record on the road anyone who would suggest that they would lay another egg in Miami; would be wrong. Quarterback Russell Wilson has played for the most part and has put the Seahawks in a good position for the playoff push. On the other hand the Miami Dolphins were losers of three straight and could not afford another home loss. In fact, it was the other rookie taken 67 spots ahead of Wilson that was the better of the two. Ryan Tannehill led his team on drives of 82,80 and 68 in the fourth quarter to lead his team to a comeback 24-21 win. The Dolphins have been a nice surprise this season but with two games against the New England Patriots (including this week) and a visit to the bay to face the 49ers, the playoffs will be nearly impossible to reach.
Second Down: “RGIII is the real deal!” Robet Griffin III has been a standout all season. Just like Cam Newton was last year Griffin (as well with Andrew Luck) have become rookie sensations. Griffin has showed poise, athleticism and a good arm over the first half of the season but it was his win on thanksgiving that may have changed the team’s fortunes. The Washington Redskins and Mike Shannahan are reaping the benefits, even after trading almost all their picks so that they could get their guy. Albeit that it his first year, Griffin was nearly perfect against the Dallas Cowboys in a 38-31 thanksgiving win. What is more impressive is that he threw for 311-yards and 4 touchdowns and had an off the scale QB rating of 132.6. Not only was the win against their most bitter rivals in their house but it was a game that got the Redskins back in the hunt. A win against the NY Giants at home on Monday night will put them in striking distance of the NFC East. While a lost would cripple any hope at that, with the slight chance at a wildcard.
Third Down: “Lame Cowboy” On the other hand the Dallas Cowboys needed the win, not just to be close to the Giants for the division, but for confidence going the rest of the way. The Cowboys have been awful at home (2-3), in fact ever since Jerry Jones built Jerry’s World; nothing has been good at home. The Cowboys needed to beat the Redskins and crush any hopes they had at the playoffs and it started well with the defense forcing a quick 3-and-out. Tony Romo had the ball in the red zone but could only manage a field goal. After that Griffin calmed down and went on an absolute tear, scoring 28 points in the fourth quarter. Romo threw the ball a career high 62 times because the running game behind Felix Jones has been anemic. The good news for Dallas is that Demarco Murray is back and will immediately improve the run game and they have 3 of their final 5 games at home against winnable teams. They first need to take care of Philadelphia on Sunday night on NBC Football.
Fourth Down: “Where is Percy?” It’s unfair to say, especially on a NFL team that one or two people make up a team but without Adrian Peterson or Percy Harvin the Minnesota Vikings are in serious trouble. No question about it, in my mind the Chicago Bears had that game EASILY. With Jay Cutler in the lineup they took care of business 28-10 dominating on both sides of the ball. The thing is, the Vikings are still in the hunt, they have snuck up on teams and played pretty good football with an average defense and a below average quarterback. That’s because Peterson is having a career year after suffering a major ACL injury last year, and Harvin is Superman. The Vikings just find ways to get the ball to Harvin weather it is on: Special teams, running the ball or quick screens, once Harvin touches the ball he is just thinking end zone. Harvin was having a career year with 62 receptions and 677-yards receiving, before going down. With two games against Green Bay and then Houston and Chicago the odds are not in their favour. In fact even with the Rams on the schedule I don’t think the Vikings will win another game all season and finish the season at (6-10).
BOLD PREDICITION WEEK 12: Adrian Peterson will have 4 touchdowns and over 150 yards rushing and still lose.

Four Downs: A look back at week 11
As we reach the end of November it’s time to separate the contenders from the pretenders. In the AFC all the divisions are pretty much set with just the wild-card spots up for grabs. While the NFC has gotten a bit more intriguing with the injury to Jay Cutler and the hot hand of Drew Brees.
First Down: “It AINT over yet for the SAINTS” After starting the season off 0-4 the chances of making the playoffs for the New Orleans Saints started to fade fast. After winning five of the last six the Saints have put themselves at .500 and back into the playoff picture. Last week the Saints cruised to a 38-17 road win agains the hapless Oakland Raiders but it was the win before that against the Atlanta Falcons that saved their season. With five of their last six games coming against teams ahead of them in the playoff hunt there can be no setbacks. Drew Brees has maintained a top aerial threat even without Darren Sproles and a running game. While their defense has completely made a 180 turn after Jonathan Vilma and Joe Vitt returned from suspensions. They also have to find ways to win on the road and in Atlanta, New York and Dallas. Up next a home game against Colin Kapernick and the San Francisco 49ers, a rematch of last year’s crazy NFC Divisional game.
Second Down: “Not so LUCK-y” To show you the importance of the quarterback position, the Indianapolis Colts won just one game last year and this year with most of the same team intact Andrew Luck has already won 6 games! Things were looking very good for Luck and the Colts until they flew into Foxbourough. In a game that many thought would be close, I believed that this was going to be a bad game for Luck and the Colts; and it was. The New England Patriots showed the difference between a verteran team and a young team learning how to win. The Patriots laid a beat down on the Colts and won 59-24, but it’s the psyche of Luck that will be a question going forward. Can he bounce back? Can he put this game behind him? No question, that he's talented but Luck threw three picks and fumbled once and looked out of sorts in a primetime game. The Colts are in a playoff spot for the moment and with Ben Roethlisberger out for Pittsburgh there is a chance. However, they will have to win their three remaining home games against Buffalo (this week), Tennessee and Houston and won on the road in either Detroit, Houston or Kansas City.
Third Down: “A Good Backup QB?” Is there such a thing as a good backup quarterback? The answer has yet to be determined and this past Monday Night, backup quarterbacks Jason Campbell (Chicago) and Colin Kapernick (San Francisco) went head to head, and it was the latter of the two getting the last laugh. The rookie Kapernick was tremendous throwing for 243-yards and 2 touchdowns against a stingy Bears defense. While Campbell was horrendous and may never get a job in the NFL after this year. There is no secret that the quarterback play is the toughest and most important in the NFL and there is a reason why only 32 men in the world have the job of a starting quarterback. Backups like Drew Stanton, Tim Tebow, Kyle Orton are not legitimate starters and are on the bench for a reason.
Fourth Down: “Can’t STEEL a win” The Pittsburgh Steelers had a tough task last week against the Baltimore Ravens and loss just 13-10 with Byron Leftwitch under centre. The Steelers defense was phenomenal holding the Ravens offense to just three points. However, now that Roethlisberger and Leftwitch are out there are forced to rely on Charlie Batch. Batch will probably get the next two starts in Cleveland and in Baltimore. Both seem like tough games with an offense that can’t score. If the Steelers want any chance at the playoffs they will need to win of the two and then split the last four games. The team is good but without their quarterback and leader Ben Roethlisberger they are just an average group of guys and Troy Polamalu has been out nearly the entire season. The way it’s looking if the Steelers lose this week I believe they will not make the playoffs.

Four Downs: A look back at week 10
The Atlanta Falcons perfect season came to an end at the hands of their most bitter rival the New Orleans Saints last Sunday. While starting quarterbacks around the league were being knocked out left, right and centre.
First Down: “The Improbable Bengals” Last year a bunch of no names in arguably one of the toughest division overcame all the odds and made the playoffs. That team was the Cincinnati Bengals, and they had just drafted their quarteback of the future (Andy Dalton) and their big playmaker (A.J. Green). However, their defense led by coach Mike Zimmer who tinkered and got the best from his players, turned the Bengals defense into a top-5 defense. This year the expectations were higher then ever but after a terrible start to the season they are quickly behind the eight ball at (4-5). After the bye week the team has played better ball, but after a home loss against Peyton and the Broncos and a match against Eli and the Giants it seemed very doom and gloom. That was until the Bengals actually faced the Giants and beat them in every facet of the game and in the score 31-13. Dalton threw a career high four touchdown passes while Eli (who has looked brutal as of late) was held in check to just 215-yards passing and 2 interceptions. If they want any chance at a post season run they will have to beat weaker teams like Kansas City next week, even if it’s in Arrowhead.
Second Down: “Is the season over already” A few years ago the Kansas City Chiefs was everybody’s sexy pick to win the division and possibly the AFC. Oh how quickly things change. The Chiefs went from contenders to pretenders in a flash. Matt Cassel forgot how to throw the long ball and Jamaal Charles despite a strong year can not carry the team like Adrian Peterson can. The Chiefs have won one game all year against a beaten down New Orleans Saints team. Since then they have not even been a close in a game until Monday night. The Chiefs defense knocked Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger out for the game and out for some time now and all of a sudden the Chiefs had a chance. Byron Leftwitch could only manage 3 points and Ryan Succop hit a game tying field goal to send it into overtime. The Chiefs won the toss and all Cassel had to do was not turnover the ball. Obviously he did on the second play and Lawrence Timmons returned the interception to the 5 yard line setting up a Shawn Suisham chip shot. The Steelers avoided a scare in a 16-13 win while the Chiefs are looking at the USC game this week against UCLA to see their future quarterback Matt Barkley in action.
Third Down: “The Baguars” Nothing has ever been right in Jacksonville since they last made the playoffs under quarterback David Garrard in 2005. Their defense was the huge issue and now that is fixed they don’t have and offense that can put up points. On Thursday they were looking to sweep the season series against the Indianiapolis Colts and Andrew Luck who was making his first primetime appearance. Luck didn’t hold anything back running in two touchdowns as his Colts won easily 27-10. After nearly upsetting the Green Bay Packers the Jaguars can only look forward to the draft to find more weapons for Blaine Gabbert. One scout said “It’s not Gabbert that is the problem it’s that he has no receivers to throw too. I have seen better receivers on college teams then on the Jaguars.” Point being whoever is the best offensive weapon in the draft, draft him. Soon enough a core of MJD, Justin Blackmon and Gabbert can once again make the Jaguars relative in the NFL.
Fourth Down: “Concussions” Last year was bad for the topic of concussions and so far this year hasn’t been so bad. That was until last week where three quarterbacks were knocked out of the game and will likely not start for some time. Alex Smith (SF) Jay Cutler (CHI) and Michael Vick (PHI) all suffered a concussion and are likely out for this week. For Cutler and Smith their teams are going at it this week but let’s be real the only thing we talk about from these teams is their defense. Arguably the best defenses in the league both teams can rely on their defense to win a game here and there but both will need their guy, come playoff time. As for the Eagles their season was already over after stinking up the joint early on but now the question of Vick’s job is in the air. If Nick Foles can somehow manage to win games then Vick and his 100 million dollar contract will both be on the way out. Vick has barely managed to stay healthy in his career and with all the expectations they are in Eagles he and Andy Ried will sure take the blame. The NFL has done a better job in protecting the quarterbacks but there is a reason only 32 men in the world have this job, it’s the toughest in all of sports. Defenses are going to try to knock the quarterback out of the game or out of rhythm and the QB’s know it. Just sometimes in the world of football something’s are not avoidable.

Four Downs: A look back at week 9
Even though the Atlanta Falcons remain undefeated the Dallas Cowboys defense held them to just 6 points through 3 quarters. Albeit that both Julio and Roddy White had 100+yard receiving the Cowboys have showed how to contain highflying offenses from scoring. While the Chicago Bears defense is averaging a touchdown per game. And that’s were we start
First Down: “Titan Wave”: The Tennessee Titans were embarrassed 51-20 at the hands of the Chicago Bears. As a result of the Bears defense's ability to create turnovers, it was 31-2 before the game was fourteen minutes in. A blocked punt, a Brian Urlacher pick-six and four forced fumbles later and the Titans were booed out of their own stadium. The lone bright spot shockingly was running back Chris Johnson who had 141 yards mostly in garbage time. Johnson has vaulted himself to sixth in rushing yards after a disastrous start to the season but the star on this day belonged to Charles “Peanut” Tillman. Known for his great skills to punch out a ball from a receiver Tillman showcased it last Sunday forcing four fumbles. Tillman will play on Sunday despite his wife giving birth the following day. Matchup of the night is who plays better between J.J Watt and Charles Tillman.
Second Down: “Roaring Back” The Detroit Lions see things bigger then ever after cruising past the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-14. Despite being held to just 70- yards rushing Lions running back Mikel Leshoure managed his best day as a pro with 3 touchdowns. Matthew Stafford didn’t throw an interception but also didn’t throw a touchdown either. Calvin Johnson had his first strong game in weeks putting up 129 yards on 8 catches. After road wins against Philly and now Jacksonville their true test comes this week at Minnesota. Can their defense be lean on to stop Adrian Peterson we shall soon find out?
Third Down “ Norv-Turnaround?” After horrendous losses to the Denver Broncos and Cleveland Browns there were a lot of question around the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers played very well on both sides of the ball against the Kansas City Chiefs cruising to a 31-13 final. The game was blown out of the water when the Chargers scored two defensive touchdowns in two minutes. Overall this is an average team in a weak division. Eddie Royal and Robert Meachem were supposed to even out the loss of Vincent Jackson but they haven’t even showed up to play all year. On Thursday night the NFL Network put up a board on the TV showing all the players Phillip Rivers has lost since he’s been QB and the list includes: Ladanian Tomlinson, Darren Sproles, Antonio Cromartie and Jackson. When you lose that many key players over a small window, you wonder how anyone can expect the Chargers to compete. If Tim Tebow was the quarterback of the Broncos right now I’d give the Chargers a chance at winning the division and making the playoffs but with Peyton Manning in the driver seat it will be nearly impossible.
Fourth Down: “Just Win or Just find ways to lose” The Oakland Raiders were supposed to be a better and more disciplined team under new and young head coach Dennis Allen. However after starting the season at 3-5, having lost Darren McFadden again with a leg injury and the team being the most penalized in the league we are right back where we were the last five years. The Raiders could not stop Doug Martin who ran all over the defense for 251-yards and 4 touchdowns the most by a rookie ever. Besides a career day by Martin the Raiders found themselves back in the game with two touchdowns split in between a Buccaneers turnover they were only down by 3 late in the fourth quarter. Carson Palmer had a chance to drive it down the field to at least tie the game but instead through a pick leading to Martin’s 4th score of the game. Raiders lost 42-32 and they need to start cleaning things up on both sides of the ball to have any chance. The light at the end of the tunnel is shrinking and now go on the road and face a hungry Baltimore Ravens team.

Four Downs- A look back at week 8
We are halfway through the season and The Atlanta Falcons are the only team undefeated. While teams like: San Diego, Philadelphia, Dallas and the New York Jets are all in deep water.
First Down: “Flying South” The Atlanta Falcons had an extra week to prepare for Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles and it sure showed. Even though the Eagles were also coming off a bye week where they had gone 12-0 under Andy Ried, it was Atlanta beating down on Philadelphia 30-17. Matt Ryan threw three first half touchdown passes including a 63-yard connection, to Julio Jones that put the game out of reach. Ryan continued to look like an MVP candidate completing 22 of 29 passes and has 17 touchdowns to just 6 interceptions. While their offense is top-5 in the league their defense still has some questions. Although they only gave up 270 yards and 17 points to the Eagles on their road, there are still holes in the defense that quarterbacks can carve up. At this rate they will surely make the playoffs but they still need to prove they can win a playoff game. Up next on Sunday Night a Dallas Cowboys team that has a history, of breaking up perfect seasons for teams.
Second Down: “Peyton Manning #Jesus Christ” Resurrected from a neck injury that saw him sit out all last year, Peyton Manning looked in prime form on Sunday night. The 1998 first overall pick had 3 touchdown passes and 300+ yards for a 4th straight week as his Broncos dominated Drew Brees and company 34-14. In a rematch of the Superbowl three years ago between the quarteebacks, number eighteen got some help on the ground, which is something he did not have back in the title game. Willis Mcgahee ran for 122-yards for Denver and and it looks like they are in the drivers seat in the AFC West. In a division where San Diego and Kansas City are having horrific years it is clear roads ahead for Manning and the Broncos. Not to mention that Manning finally has a defense that can force 3-and-outs and turnovers, to give him the ball more often.
Third Down: “Doug Martin and the Buccaneers” Doug Martin was selected 31st overall out of Boise State in this year’s past draft and now the Tampa Bay Buccaneers look like they have a future running back. Martin was expected to take over the reigns from LeGarrette Blount but no one could have predicted how good he has been so far. With Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck
leading the Rookie of the Year award (ROY), but do not forget about feisty Doug Martin. After a loss against New Orleans, in which the Bucs played very well Martin and Company came in riding high and destroyed Christian Ponder and the Vikings 36-17. It was a battle between the running backs Adrian Peterson and Doug Martin and it was the rookie who came out on top. Martin had 135-yards rushing and 2 Touchdowns (1 caught). Along with Vincent Jackson and Mark Barron, Martin has been the lone standouts on a team in a clear rebuild mode. Josh Freeman has been decent as of late but don’t expect the same numbers when the Bucs head to Oakland and face the stingy Oakland Raiders defense this week.
Fourth Down: “Alex Smith” Perfection is rarely achieved in the NFL. The Miami Dolphins did it in 1972 while the New England Patriots came a Super Bowl away from doing it in 2010. Alex Smith nearly accomplished perfection on Monday night, throwing just one incompletion to 3 touchdowns against the Arizona Cardinals in a 24-3 laugher. The Cardinals defense was shredded through the air and Michael Crabtree outplayed Patrick Peterson to score two Touchdowns against him. The 49ers defense continued to lay a whole lot of pain even if it was against a weak offensive line in the league. The 49ers head to their bye week feeling good about themselves and perhaps trying to grab some magic from the World Champion San Francisco Giants.
Four Downs- A look back at week 7
Last week the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texans faced off in a match between the two teams in the AFC with an above .500 record; and it was all one sided.
First Down: “Dismantling the Ravens” When one door closed another one opened for the Houston Texans. After a lackluster performance against Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, they now had to deal with the return of Terrell Suggs. Suggs was supposed to be out all season but through hard work managed to come back by week 7. He had an impact early in the first quarter, but there were visible signs of rust. The Texans got a safety early and that jumpstarted the defense which picked off Joe Flacco 2 times, returning one to the house in a 43-13 mauling. The offense continues to flow through Arian Foster who had 98-yards and 2 scores against a Ravens defense that is starting to look old. While Andre Johnson and the passing game hasn’t picked it up yet, Foster remains the team’s workhorse. Through the first seven games Foster has 9 touchdowns and 659 yards, putting him on pace for 20 TD's. As great as the run game is, it's Wade Phillips defense that has been getting all the praise and rightfully so. The Texans use to be the joke of the league on defense but now with studs J.J. Watt, Connor Barwin and Whitney Mercilus as a linebacking core, they have become one of the most feared defenses in the league. The Texans could not have asked for a better start before their bye week. Their first in the AFC and have home advantage is in their sights. Their schedule is pretty easy the rest of the way besides a trip to New England and Chicago, to wrap up the AFC.
Second Down: “ALL DAY” Given the nickname in his first year out of Oklahoma, Adrian Peterson has lived up to the name and has become a beast in the NFL. To further my point, last year Peterson suffered his first severe injury as a pro (a torn ACL). A regular human being usually can’t lift his leg for two weeks after surgery; AP was lifting his leg right after surgery. He was expected to miss at least half the season and probably more, but instead has played since opening day. Listening to Peterson talk, he knows he can get better is showing improvements each week. Last Sunday his Minnesota Vikings were in tough against the Arizona Cardinals. The Vikings needed “All Day” to step up and score his first TD since week one! Peterson scored on a spectacular 13-yard run and finished the day with 153-yards on the ground, which was huge because Christian Ponder had one of the worst performances ever. Ponder completed only 8 of 17 passes for 58 yards and 2 interceptions in the 21-14 win. If the Vikings want to make the playoffs it’s going to have to be on the backs of Peterson and the strong defense, which ranks sixth. It also helps to go a perfect 8-0 at home and the Vikings look to extend their home winning streak to 5 on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Third Down: “Steel Town” After losing on the road to Tennessee two weeks ago the Pittsburgh Steelers had plenty of time to think about their next game. Under the lights, “Big” Ben Roethlisberger through for 278-yards while Jonathan Dwyer ran for 122, as the Steelers beat the Cincinnati Bengals 24-17. In a big division match, on the road, the Steelers defense stepped up holding Andy Dalton to only 105 yards throwing, and A.J. Green to just one catch. Up next for the Steelers, they face two tough NFC East opponents in Washington and at New York.
Fourth Down: “The Buffalo Bills” Just when you think you have seen the worse from the Buffalo Bills, something even worse happens. After awful performances against New England and San Francisco, the Bills looked good in a win against the Cardinals. However, Chris Johnson and the Titans were coming to town and CJ24 has never had a bad game against Buffalo in his career. He stung them again running for a season best 195-yards and 2 scores including a career high 83-yard run. Bills Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick looked good all game until a costly pick with just under 4 minutes to go. The Titans score a d touchdown on 4th and 9 with just over a minute left. Matt Hasselback found Nate Washington for a 15 yard score and the Titans held on for a 35-34 win. The Bills could have remained tied for first had they won, but now they have to put the past in the past and gear up for Foster and the Texans after the bye week.

Four Downs- A look back at week 6
The Seattle Seahawks continue to shock the world and one of the bests in Ray Lewis may call it a career.
First Down: “The Series of Unfortunate Dallas Cowboy Events” Taken from the title one of my favourite books written by Lemony Snicket. The series tells a story of three orphans and all the unfortunate events they endure. The last few years the Dallas Cowboys couldn’t have a more unfortunate tale to tell. From Tony Romo’s season ending injury against the NY Giants, to losing against them in the final game of the season last year. There are so many moments that you could pick from that the Cowboys should have won but didn’t and last week’s 31-29 loss was the latest wound. They outplayed the Ravens in every facet of the game including 227-yards on the ground but still found themselves down eight, with just over 4 minutes to play. Romo orchestrated an 18 play, 4-minute drive that resulted in a Dez Bryant touchdown. However, Bryant had the two point convert go through his hands resulting thus giving the game to the Ravens right; wrong. The Cowboys recovered the onside kick and a pass-interference call later, they were in Dan Bailey’s range. Bailey was a perfect 8-8 in field goal attempts this year but missed the 51-yard kick just left and the Cowboys were sent home losers. They have a tough remaining schedule and at (2-3) they are in in a grind.
Second Down: “Pete Carrol’s Seattle Seahawks” There is no argument that Pete Carroll was a successful coach at his time at USC but many questioned if he could be the same coach in the NFL. He had two tenures in the NFL as HC with the New York Jets and New England Patriots. Since coming to Seattle in 2010, Carroll has drafted well and brought in the right personnel in order to be competitive. People remember the Marshawn Lynch magical run in the playoffs against the Saints but this year there has been even more magic. From Golden Tate’s game-winning TD to this past weekend where QB Russell Wilson came down from 13 points against Tom Brady and the Pats. The defense picked off Brady twice and did not let him score in the 4th. The Seahawks loss to the 49ers 13-6 on Thursday and are now (4-3)
Third Down: “Bleeding Blue” The NY Giants are like a box of chocolate, you never know what you will get. Forrest Gump’s infamous line is very fitting for this team because the fact of the matter you don’t know what your going to get. They get showed up on banner night against the Dallas Cowboys and looked awful going down 14+ points against Tampa Bay and Cleveland at home. On Sunday when many like this writer though that the San Francisco 49ers would own the stage, it was quite the opposite. The Giants went on the road, shut down a rushing game that put up 300-yards a week before and forced QB Alex Smith into 3 interceptions. It also helps when Ahmad Bradshaw had over 100-yards rushing for the second straight week. Any team could use a good rushing game but the Giants have mastered the play action and when they have Hakeem Nicks or Victor Cruz in man on man you usually know where Eli Manning is going to go. This week they face another test in Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins.
Fourth Down: “Ray Lewis” If it’s an end of an era I’m glad to say that I was around to see most of Ray Lewis’s career. He came into the league in 1996 when I was a wee little tad. In 2000 (Super Bowl XXXV) Lewis led his Ravens to a Superbowl and took home the MVP honors. I was not around for the Dick Butkus’s of the league but Lewis has always been the best linebacker to play in my mind. He has 50 career turnovers but what is more impressive is how he carries himself off the field. After watching Ray Lewis’s “A Football Life” (which I highly recommend) I truly got to appreciate how much he loves the game and the passion that he brings. If this is his last his legacy will go down as someone who laid everything out on the line each game, each play and for his amazing entrances.

His great motivational speeches before games.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUra9wrjCfU
And his relentless play.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrnDLXxVoFE
Lewis might still play this season and could still choose to play next year, but if it is the last we see of Ray then I want to thank him for inspiring, motivating and playing football the right way.
Enjoy week 7 with many big games on the slate.

Four Downs- A look back at week 5
By:Sam Mendelsohn
If there is anything to analyze about week five it’s that the NFL is the most unpredictable sport there is. Drew Brees finally led the Saints to victory, passing the great Johnny Unitas for most consecutive games with a touchdown pass. The Indianapolis Colts however, were the story of the week.
First Down: “The Indianapolis Colts” After receiving the emotional news that new HC Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with Leukemia, the game against the Green Bay Packers seemed to be put on the back burner. Right out of the gates the Colts fans showed their emotions, with a huge ovation as the team entered LucasOil Stadium, but the first half belonged to Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers was nearly perfect with two TD passes leading his team to a 21-3 halftime lead. Bruce Arians or (BA) as he is referred to by the Colts, had to motivate a team in the spot of his ailing friend and down eighteen points. Whatever Arians said helped flipped the game 180 degrees. Quarterback Andrew Luck threw two touchdown passes and ran one in, while Reggie Wayne had a career high 13 receptions for 212 and a score. The Colts got help from Packers kicker Mason Crosby who shanked the tying 51-yards Field Goal and gave the Colts the win. The Colts may not make the playoffs but that game will be remembered by Colts fans for all the heart that was laid out on that field.
Second Down: “Easy Brees-y” Ok. I mentioned my man crush on Brees last week but can you blame me? This guy is a machine and has managed to stay cool, calm and collected through a four game losing streak. A win against the team that drafted him and passing legend Johnny U all on the same night was purely spectacular. The Saints pulled a Plaxico and shot themselves in the foot going 0-4 and the Atlanta Falcons seem to be on a freight train heading towards the playoffs. Every win is huge in the NFL and the Saints can now head into their bye week with a good feelings about themselves. However, the record that Brees broke on Sunday night means just a little more then the win, even if he won’t admit it. Brees has always been overlooked, even in San Diego when he had never reached his prime. He came to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, revitalized a city, won a Lombardi trophy and Superbowl MVP. Last year he passed one of the longest standing records in the NFL held by the great Dan Marino. Sunday night’s performance further showed that Brees is one of the best to play the position.
Third Down: “Jeff Fisher” The last few years the St. Louis Rams have been brutal. To put into perspective since 2004 when they last made the playoffs the Rams have not had a season over .500. They had a chance in 2010 to win a do-or-die game against Seattle at home, but stunk up their own place and were booted from the playoffs. This year they hired one of the all-time greats in Jeff Fisher. Fisher has a great Win/Loss record as a coach and had been successful for many years in Tennessee. On Thursday night against the division leading and undefeated Arizona Cardinals, the Rams defense combined for nine sacks against the Cards offense. After the game Arizona quarterback Kevin Kolb looked like he had just gone five rounds in the octagon. The Rams now sit just one game back in a close NFC West.
Fourth Down: “Da Bears” Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman became the first duo on the same team to return an interception to the house in two consecutive games. The Bears clobbered the Jacksonville Jaguars 41-3 and the fact that the Packers (2-3) and Lions (1-3) are struggling, leaves the Bears as the team to beat in the NFC North. Matt Forte isn’t 100-percent from an ankle injury but he’s managing, and him and Brian Urlacher will get healthier as the season goes along. They have old reliable Robbie Gould has proven he can kick in pressure moments, but most of all Jay Cutler is playing well. The team looked poised for the playoff last year before Cutler suffered an injury and seem to be on the right track this year.
Week 6 has a major Sunday Night Showdown with defense going against offense. J.J Watt against Aaron Rodgers. Green Bay at Houston 8:20. Enjoy.

Four Downs- A look back at week 4
By:Sam Mendelsohn
After reaching the quarter mark in the seasons we are starting to see teams pull away from the pack. Houston, Atlanta both head into Sunday as the remaining undefeated teams. While the Saints and Browns have yet to win a game.
First Down: “Wild Showdown in Atlanta”
Coming off his worst performance as a pro, Cam Newton looked to rebound against the undefeated Atlanta Falcons. For most of the game Cam showed why he was selected first overall in 2011. Utilizing his speed, arm and decision making, Newton led the Panthers all game until a costly fumble in the fourth. The Panthers recovered the ball but chose to punt the ball. The punt was perfect by Brain Nortman, landing on the Falcons half-yard line. But on the very next play Matt Ryan threw a 56-yard pass to Roddy White setting up the eventual game winning field goal. You must think that Ron Rivera was considering that move to go for it and win the game on 4th down. Instead he and his team are left with just a 1-3 record.
Second Down: “Leaving on a JET-plane”
The Jets were shutout at home against one of the toughest defenses in the SanFrancisco 49ers but their is issue long term. They are without two key players on both sides of the ball in Santonio Holmes and Darelle Revis. Putting all the pressure on Mark Sanchez who was a brutal 13 for 29 for 103 yards. Look, the 49ers defense is tops in the league but I strongly advise that Ryan go to Tebow; he can’t do any worse. After another home shutout at the hands of the Texans Defense on Monday night there will be no other choice but to call on Tim Tebow.
Third Down: “Hard Knocks”
When HBO chose the Miami Dolphins to be the team they followed I like many questioned why? The episodes came and went without a single win in the pre-season. Joe Philbin however, is a very good coach in this league and has been for some time. Seeing his team nearly steal a game in Arizona was surely a good sign and rookie Ryan Tannehill played well. Tannehill started training camp as the third string quarterback and has quickly shown he has what it takes to play in the league. He dropped back 41 times and threw for over 430 yards but had two costly turnovers. The Dolphins dropped to 1-3 but there is a glimmer of light shining at the end of the tunnel.
Fourth Down: “The Saints go quietly marching on and on.”
It’s no easy task for any team to walk into Lambeau and steal a game away from Aaron Rodgers and the cheese heads, but the Saints desperately needed a win. Had it not been for a holding call on a crucial dying seconds kick, the Saints would have stole away a win. The one bright spot is that Drew Brees will yet again etch his name into the history books. Brees should pass Johnny Unitas’s record that has lasted fifty-two years of 48 consecutive games with a touchdown pass. The ironic thing is that it will come against the team that drafted him and let him go, at home on Sunday night. It’s like NBC knew this would be the case and planned it so accordingly. Oh, how I love when things fall into place and when it’s a guy like Drew Brees at the centre I will surely be watching. He like me has been looked the other way for most of our lives because we are both vertically challenged. I will be rooting for Brees and the Saints come 815. Saints 38- Chargers 27
Four Downs- A look back at week 3
Three weeks into the NFL season and there are some shocking storylines with the Patriots and Packers both (1-2) while Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints still search for their first win of the season.
First Down: “I bid you Adieu”
Let's get the replacement referees out of the way, and good riddance. When the NFL agreed on nearly 2 Billion Dollars worth of profit last year the referees were not mentioned in the deal. For the first three weeks of the season the “other refs” caused quite a problem. The tip of the iceberg came between the Seahawks and Packers Monday night game when D.J. Jennings intercepted Russell Wilson to end the game yet for some reason the Seahawks were awarded the win. The play has been easily ruled one of the worst calls in officiating history and nearly 300 million dollars changed hands because of it. The result of that play brought an end to the fiasco as the regular referees were re-instated and back in for Thursday’s game between the Ravens and the Browns. You know what they say: not until it costs you a game does there has to be a change. The referees clearly made the smarter chess move and left Goodell with no choice.
Second Down: “Where art thou Pack”
That game did more damage too the Packers psyche then some people can imagine, and I bet it’s not the only time they will be “screwed” by a call the rest of the season. Green Bay has already doubled their amount of losses from last season and brought back most of the team from a year ago. No question the Packers should be at (2-1) but they allowed 8 sacks and seemed unable to get into rhythm at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. Aaron Rodgers was on the ground more times then a baby trying to learn to walk and his wide-outs could not hold onto a single ball all game. Up next at home against the hungry Saints.
Third Down: Belichick’s Fine.
I think New England Patriots Head coach Bill Belichck would tell you that he’d rather that win against Baltimore on Sunday Night then 50,000$. But he’d also tell you he would want that money back and should never have lost it in the first place. The last play of the game which was a field goal, was so inconclusive that it was screaming for a replay but the referees had already left the field. Belichick ran after an official and demanded a reasoning by attempting to grab him, he failed. Unfortunately it is against rules to touch a referee and Belichick did not get an explanation.
Fourth Down: “ Down to 3”
It started at 32 and now there are only three teams left that are undefeated: Atlanta, Houston and the shocking Arizona Cardinals. The Falcons have dismantled three fourths of the AFC West in (SD, Den, KC) Houston had to go by (Den,Jax,Miami) and Arizona surprisingly knocked off (Philly,Sea and New England in Foxbourough). I always enjoy a good story and Ken Wisenhunt is one of the best coaches in the league and it's about time he gets some recognition. He’s got a fierce line on both sides of the ball and Pro-Bowler Larry Fitzgareld at wide-out. The Cardinals face a beaten down Miami team at home. Houston has Tennessee and should roll pass them while Atlanta has Carolina and a rested Cam Newton. Could be an upset but I see all three moving to 4-0.
Tune in to next week for Week 4 analysis.

Big Time Stars: It’s a Love-Hate Relationship Part 1 Lebron James
Lebron, Tiger Woods, Sidney Crosby, Alex Rodriguez. There is something about being the face of a sport that captivates everyone. Sports are essential in the fabric of society. It gives young kids big dreams; it keeps people active and healthy and for some it’s a livelihood. Each of the five athletes I mentioned is or has been the face of their sport at one point in their careers. Think about that for a second, an entire sport, where there are countless number of players playing at the highest level that make up the body of the league but only one can be the face of the sport.
The most polarizing start to come onto the scene in years is Lebron James. Scouted as the next best thing and proclaiming himself “The King,” James could have played professional football but felt that he was a better basketball player. Good call. Since being drafted #1 overall out of St Mary’s-St.Vincent high-school (the last high-school player ever to be drafted) James’s jersey has sold more than anyone else in the league and time and time again wow’s us with his spectacular play. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAmW2C6hxiM)
By the time James' senior year began, he had already appeared on the covers of ESPN the Magazine and Sports Illustrated with the caption “The Chosen One.” Since then he has graced the cover nearly 10 times with other captions like “The New Era” “The Importance of being Lebron” and “Best Ever?” In his nine-year career James has made it to three championship finals including this year’s. He has gone 0 for 2 but perhaps the third time’s the charm. He has also won 3 MVP’s including this year’s, a few scoring titles, an Olympic Gold in 2008 and even though his play has gradually improved each year, there are people out there that just want to see him fail and no it’s not just the state of Ohio. For most, it was the widely speculated and much talked about "Decision” in which James chose Miami and his 2 buddies Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh that got people angry . What people may not know is that Lebron made 1 million dollars from “The Decision” all of which went to his charity: The Boys and Girls Club of Ohio. (http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/04/boys_and_girls_clubs_in_northe.html)
The thing that really gets people angry when they hear James’s name mentioned is what happened a few days after he announced his decision. Was it just pure cockiness? Absolutely. The Miami Heat held a party to welcome the Big Three, to which Lebron Said: “ Not 1…. Not 2…Not 3…” referring to the Rings he will win. Even this writer believes that was a little too overboard from James who has yet to back it up. Had he won last year and then said it after the confetti had fallen, then you would not have an argument, but he’s 0 for 1 as a member of the Heat.
Whether it was the Decision or it’s the thought of a power team like the Heat existing, James should not be criticized. I’m not a big basketball fan but I do enjoy watching Lebron play. The guy is just a force. Double-team or triple-team him and he will still find the open player, hit the nice jay or take it to the hoop for a flush. His combination of Power, Speed and Will are unmatched. Comparing him to Michael Jordan is just not fair. It’s like comparing Gretzky to Crosby, its apples and oranges. Jordan and Gretzky were on a totally different level then James and Crosby. The time period was different. If you are mad because the team is just three players, look who Jordan played with: Scottie Pippen and Denis Rodman, both Hall-Of-Famers. I can almost guarantee as great as Jordan was, without Pippen or Rodman they do not win those championships. The same applies with Gretzky, who had Messier, Jari Kurri, with Grant Fuhr as a Goalie in Edmonton,.At the end of the day Lebron plays the game the right way and is a true role model to little kids who wear his Heat#6 or his Cavaliers #23 jersey.
James has been in the spotlight his entire life; just watch his documentary “More Than a Game.” He was drafted by his hometown team the Cleveland Cavaliers and just could not win a championship. Great seasons led to disappointing playoffs. They did everything they could to win around James, including bringing in a guy named SHAQ. He wanted to win and chose to move on. Gretzky left Edmonton.,Jordan left the Bulls,it happens; just the way it went down was not the brightest but it did bring money to a charity and he has been nothing short of spectacular. Lebron.it’s time to prove the naysayer’s wrong with a ring and to do it against the other best player in the league Kevin Durant, would just be the icing on the cake.

Hockey's Frozen Four
Hockey's Frozen Four
Gary Bettman and the NHL would love a New York Ranger, Los Angeles Kings Cup Final this writer believe that Martin Brodeur will have something to say about it. Finally it comes down to four teams. The defending champion Bruins were de-throned and teams like Detroit and Pittsburgh did not fulfill their potential, the last remaining teams may not be the usual suspects, but both series lack no shortage of drama.
(1) New York Rangers vs. (6) New Jersey Devils
Skinny: After winning two games 7's on home ice the Rangers are looking to reach the cup final for the first time since winning it in 1994. While the owners of Madison Square Garden would love another game 7,making it twelve home games in the first 3 rounds, their opponent may have other plans. Since last year's all-star break the Devils have been a winning machine. It certainly doesn't hurt getting the 4th overall pick last year in Adam Larsson. Last year Brodeur struggled, but with the help from his friends: Anton Volchenkov, Bryce Salvador and Andy Greene have employed a tough trap with players willing to do anything to block shots. The team split the season series three games apiece.
Ranges win if: Henrik Lundqvist is the best player on the ice. The Vezina and Hart nominee has had a tremendous season and playoffs. His team wins a lot of 2-1 games so keeping the Devils under 2 goals is a must. Brad Richards must continue to spark the offense and the power play needs to start clicking. Ryan Callahan and Marian Gaborik need to contribute with goals and the team continues to buy in on blocking shots and playing a hard hitting defense.
Devils win if: Ilya Kovalchuk stills play with a chip on his shoulder. After signing the big contract and never being able to live up to it, Kovalchuk is finally showing why he is one of the NHL’s best talents. Kovalchuk had never been able to win a playoff round before this season mostly because he played on a weak Atlanta Thrashers team. The top line with Kovy, David Clarkson and Zach Parise forms a gritty but very capable scoring 1st line. The Devils defense first approach is similar to the Rangers, but play the trap game better. To win the series the team will need to score more then 2 goals a game and Martin Brodeur has to still drink from the fountain of youth.
Prediction: Devils in 6
(3) Phoenix Coyotes vs. (8) Los Angeles Kings
Skinny: The teams split the season series at three games apiece but five of the games were without Jeff Carter in the line-up. Since the Carter addition and Darryl Sutter becoming the new coach, the Kings have been the hottest team in hockey. After knocking the 1st and 2nd seeds, the Kings are poised to take down the 3rd seed Coyotes. After taking game 1 on the road, they now boast a perfect 6-0 record in the playoffs. The Coyotes must split at home to have a chance in the series.
Coyotes win if: Mike Smith’s Cinderella story continues to have a happy ending. There is no denying the reason the Coyotes are here is because of Smith. While he can block most shots he can’t score them…..well almost. The Yotes don’t have the offense scoring depth the Kings provide but they do find ways to be productive. Antoine Vermette, Ray Whitney and Shane Doan will have to provide offense and Oliver Ekman-Larsson can’t look out of place like he did in game 1.
Kings win if: They play the way they are now. With the return of Simon Gagne the question is do you rock the boat? The team has played superb without Gagne and while he can provide secondary scoring the team has shown that all four lines can score as evidenced in the game last night. Fourth liner Dwight King potted two goals giving him four in the playoffs, to put in perspective he had five all season. Jonathan Quick is the backbone of the Kings and if he falters so will the team, if he continues to play like he is now the Kings will be a favourite to win it all.
Prediction: Kings in 6.

Let the Games Begin
The beauty of having the NFL DRAFT in late-April is that all the major free-agent signings have been dealt with. As with every off-season it’s not clear to determine who really won and lost the off-season but with Peyton Manning and Tim Tebow changing teamsthere was no short of big stories this off-season. Here are my top five storylines:
Manning Heads to the Rockies: Let’s not beat around the bush. The biggest free-agent on the market was without a doubt the biggest storyline. With many twists and turns, the “Peyton Manning Saga”, the search for Manning’s new home finally came to a halt when Manning agreed to a 5 year 96 million dollar contract with the Denver Broncos. He joins a team with an above average offensive-line and a running game that's as good as he had since his 1st year in the league when Marshall Faulk was a member of the Colts. Time will tell how the Manning Era in Denver will go, but with the “John’s” leading the Broncos brain trust in (Elway and Fox) and a defense that’s young and fast, this could finally be the environment Manning needs to do what he does best. Manage 4 Quarters of Football.
Tebow Mania hits the Big Apple: The 48- hour roller coaster continued for the Denver Bronco’s organization when the shipped former 1st round pick Tim Tebow to the New York Jets for a 4th and a 6th. After taking the team to an 8-8 record, winning the AFC West Division and upsetting the Steelers in the Wild-Card Round, Tebow was shipped to the Jets mere weeks after Mark Sanchez signed a contract extension. While Rex remains confident that Sanchez will start, with the way the season ended last year and if the Jets struggle out of the gates expect Tebowmania to hit the Big Apple led by Wildcat guru Tony Sparano.
Million Dollar man in Buffalo….Huh? If you read the title of this storyline and still haven’t heard the news about the Buffalo Bills then you must be living under a rock. The Bills are a team that was on the cusp of moving and several weeks into the season were 1st in the AFC East. After a second half collapse the Bills added the second biggest name on the market. Former 1st overall pick outside linebacker Mario Williams signed with the Bills and boy did he get paid.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_fbUD35lHc
Williams went to Buffalo the first day free agency opened and never left. Signing a 6 year 100 million dollar contract with the Bills. His presence alone adds to arguably the best defensive line in the AFC with Kyle Williams and sophomore Marcell Dareus. However,Williams is just apiece to the puzzle and there are still pieces missing. This was a big move by the Bills who want to return to the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
Miami Meltdown: It all started the second Free Agency opened when the Dolphins shipped Brandon Marshall to the Bears for nothing in return. It looked like it was clearing cap for Manning but he took his talents to Denver. So there was trading up for Robert Griffin the Third…BUT the Washington Redskins beat them to the punch. The Dolphins are the high school kids who ended up taking their cousin to prom, only to have her leave with someone else. The embarrassments continued when they signed David Garrard who missed all of last season because no one wanted to hire him. Coming off his first 1,000 yard rushing season Reggie Bush will have to take a major load off Matt Moore and or Ryan Tannehill. Unfortunately for Dolphins fan, this was your chance at a franchise QB and you screwed you, so YES all hope is lost. So to conclude Ryan Tannehill will be another Chad Henne. A failure.
Last but CERTAINLY not Least:
I would be remiss if I did not mention the New Orleans Saints. One of my favourite teams led by two of my favourite NFL personalities in Drew Brees and Sean Peyton. This was a forgetful off-season for the Saints, who were hit hard with a major punishment for Greg Williams and the Defense’s “Bounty-Scandal.” We all know that the reason for the scandal was that Williams and certain members of the defense would give added incentive to anyone who knocked players out of the game, but it was not the crime as much as it was the cover-up that pushed the NFL's hand. When you think at how concussions have been such a hot topic as of late and you take in to consideration the Saints have 17 unsportsmanlike penalties on defense (2nd most only to the Raiders) since 2009, the punishment fits the crime. The biggest loss will be Sean Peyton, whose play-calling will solely be missed on a team that relies on its scoring.
The NFL Off-season was again fast and quick. Players switching teams happens in all pro sports, but it seemed more often this year with some of the contracts sign, players were more concerned on getting paid then getting their name etched on the Lombardi trophy.
Hollywood has a place for Hockey
The Los Angeles Kings magical playoff run is putting hockey on the map in Hollywood
If you finish 29th in league scoring during the year and still make the playoffs, there's probably only one reason why? Goaltender Jonathan Quick finally had his breakout year and is putting the team on his back and possibly into the Cup Finals. Quick's numbers were Vezina worthy posting a 35-21-13 record with a 1.95 G.A.A. and a league best 10 Shutouts. The Kings were also part of the most 1-goal games this season winning 30 of a possible 48. There are people however, who believe that the Kings really took off on Dec.20, the day Darryl Sutter became the new coach replacing Terry Murray. When Sutter stepped in, the Kings were out of the playoff picture, but he soon realized the strengths and weaknesses of this team, and decided if they were going to be a low-scoring team that they better play good defensive hockey. Currently, up 3-0 on the St. Louis Blues in the 2nd round shows that his guidance and leadership has been nothing short of a prayer for the Kings.
When Sutter was introduced, they were just coming off an 8-2 pounding at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings. GM Dean Lombardi had seen enough. So in comes Sutter and turns the team around going 26-13-11 down the stretch and into the post-season, and if that wasn't too shabby enough they knocked off the President Trophy winners Vancouver Canucks easily in five games. The big off-season the Kings had finally started to pay-off when they brought in Jeff Carter at the deadline. Carter brought instant scoring capability and his time spent with Mike Richards gave the Kings some familiarity. With the addition of Carter the teams Centre's position was set with Kopitar, Stoll and Trever Lewis down the middle. While the Dustin's (Penner and Brown) have really hit their stride and are helping carry the team's offensive load. The team's real asset though lies on its blue line. With young guys Slava Voynov and Drew Doughty paired with gritty veterans Willie Mitchell, Rob Scudari and Matt Greene the team has a lot of heart and their ability to block shots in front of their net minder is an added bonus.
It may be a surprise to many that the Kings are having so much success, but for me it's just a good team realizing it's full potential. During the course of the season, I was up many late nights (being that I live on the east coast) watching L.A and the only thing I took notice too was their inability to score. The common mistake among hockey people, is that they think that a team's core and chemistry can be formed over a six weeks span during pre-season, however as is the case in most sports it takes a team time during the season to get in sync and endure many obstacles, to finally come out on top.
The Kings are a perfect 5-0 on the road in the playoffs and by finishing eighth they will have to continue the hot road play onto either Nashville or Phoenix. The team is just five wins away from the first Stanley Cup berth since they lost to the Montreal Canadiens in the '93 Cup Final. They also have a guy in Mike Richards who has won at every level he's played but never a Stanley Cup. Hi s leadership will continue to play a pivotal factor for the Kings. There's no question the team will live and die by the play of Jonathan Quick and as long as the Kings can hold their opponents to two goals or less this team will have a great shot at hosting lord Stanley.
Trade,Trade Come This Way!
It’s the most anticipated day in all of hockey, that is, if you’re not playing in the NHL.
February 27th has been marked on all the calendars and it is fast approaching. The NHL trade deadline is the biggest deadline day in all of sports. With TSN’s extensive coverage, along with Sportsnet and The Score, each deal is broken down to the tenth degree. For some players, it’s a nightmare. Many have grown accustomed to their surroundings and their families are settled in, but some players can’t escape the rumours. Ah yes, those excellent colourful yet not accurate in the slightest rumours. These are the words of experts that might result in players picking up there stuff and moving to another team. Some players are rentals because their contracts either expire at the end of the season, or they are near the end of their careers. General Managers spend every day analyzing their teams, but on this occasion and the night before (you have to think) they are making calls and staying on top of the action.
Last year was a disappointing deadline with only sixteen trades and thirty-five players moved. That might not be so bad, but the year before the trade record was broken, with thirty-one deals and fifty-five players swapping places. The expectations were high as they are every year, but this year poses the most interesting of deadlines, as the CBA agreement expires at the conclusion of the season. The standings are as log-jammed as they can possibly get. Fifth and twelfth place in the Eastern conference are only separated by a mere 13 points, which is not a lot when you consider there are over 20 odd games to be played. In the West it is a similar story, eight points separate sixth and thirteenth place. For teams like Carolina and Columbus, their seasons have been nothing short of disastrous. Both have fired and hired coaches mid-season, and sit in last place in their respective conferences. Both teams have key players, in Jarkko Ruutu and Rick Nash, that are at the centre of discussions. Nash’s resume far outweighs that of Ruutu’s, and consequently will demand a higher price. Toronto and Calgary hold down the 8th and final playoff spots and are looking to get over the hump. Toronto has some pieces but what Brian Burke decides to do with them will be analyzed and scrutinized until the end of time.
Whether it’s a good deadline or a bad deadline truly depends on a fan’s opinion. People all over North America will be on some sort of news feeding device to receive the most up-to-date information on the latest trades.

Mario Manningham makes David Tyree-like catch to win Super Bowl XLVI
By:Sam Mendelsohn
After the final whistle was blown and the champagne was popped, the New York Giants celebrated another Super bowl win over their Boston rivals the New England Patriots. Once again it was Eli Manning who took home the game's MVP award and another spectacular catch stole the show.
Wide Receiver Mario Manningham known as the ³Forgotten Man²in New York had his own version of the David Tyree improbable catch. (see attached video) Manningham caught 5 passes for 73 yards, but none was bigger then the 38yd reception he made deep in Giants
territory with under 5 minutes to play. In 2008 when the Giants needed a spark it was Eli Manning ability to escape the pressure and David Tyree using his helmet to make a catch 30yds down field. Fast-forward to February5th 2012, down by two deep in Giant territory Eli Manning stepped up in the pocket and threw the ball too Manningham. Similar to Tyree¹s catch four years earlier, the play was a key part of the game winning drive. The nine-play, 88-yard drive eventually led to the Giants 21-17 win.
The game shaped up to be exactly the same as it was the first time around, relatively low-scoring, with defense shutting the offense down in the red-zone. Once again Tom Brady had the ball for a chance to win the game and could not get it done. The Giants
defensive line did just enough to keep Brady off tempo and out of the
end-zone.
Bill Belichick and Tom Brady had two weeks to prepare which is usually bad
news for the opposition, but it appears the Giants have the Patriots number.
The game was more then just Football, it was New York vs. Boston and it was
New York victorious and Boston shaking there heads.

The Job of A NFL Kicker
Many times has a kickers position been questioned when it comes to importance on a football team. They do not make the same money the likes of Tom Brady or Peyton Manning does but they can be very important to a team winning the Super bowl. When talking about pressure moments it is these men who are called upon to become heroes.
Watching the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots vie for a spot in the Super bowl and Billy Cundiff missing the kick that would have sent the game into overtime, all I could think about is Ray Finkle. Finkle is a made up character from the movie Ace Ventura Pet Detective. After missing the game winning kick that would have won it all for the Dolphins, he lost his mind. No one said the job of a kicker was easy; it is just something that someone has to do. It can result in being a hero, or a goat for the rest of the world to laugh it. Billy Cundiff is one of those goats, but he is not alone. Along with Cundiff and Finkle there are many kickers who missed timely field goals that could have changed history. One could surely remember Canadian Mike Vanderjagt who was a lifetime eighty-eight percent kicker during the season, but with everything on the line a routine kick became insurmountable. In the 2005 playoffs, Vandergajt a member of the Indianapolis Colts missed a 46yd FG that resulted in Pittsburgh winning 21-18. However, the most notorious kicking blunder was none other then Buffalo Bills kicker Scott Norwood. (see attached video on the bottom) Norwood’s 47yd miss in Super Bowl XXV has given us the infamous call “Wide Right” and the New York Giants a Super bowl ring.
There are many people who believe that because their professionals they can kick from all different yardages but it is in fact one of the toughest things to do in all of sports. Did I forget to mention the entire world is watching? It’s easy to point the blame finger at one player but football is a team sport. A play here, a play there all could have been a difference maker in possibly preventing the kick from ever happening. If Lee Evans had not dropped the game-winning touchdown then Cundiff’s kick would never have mattered and the Ravens would be in the Super bowl.
